Equation Solver 🧮

Type the coefficients and the answer appears with the working underneath — exact fractions and square roots, not long decimals. Quadratics with Δ < 0 get their complex roots, as in Grade 12.

    How the solver works

    Exact answers

Every coefficient is kept as a fraction, so the roots come out as 3/4 or 1 ± 2√3 rather than 0.75 or 4.4641016. A decimal approximation is printed beside an irrational answer for checking, never instead of it.

    Δ and Δ′

A quadratic is solved with the discriminant Δ = b² − 4ac. When b is even the page also shows the reduced discriminant Δ′ = b′² − ac with b′ = b/2, the shortcut the Khmer syllabus teaches. When Δ < 0 it says there is no real root and gives the two complex roots.

    Cubics and systems

A cubic is solved by finding a rational root with the ±p/q test, dividing it out by synthetic division (Horner), and solving the quadratic that is left. If there is no rational root the roots are found numerically. Systems use Cramer's rule, with each determinant shown.

    Nothing leaves your device

The solving happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or saved. The address bar keeps the equation, so you can send the link to a classmate and they will see the same working.

The solver shows the steps. A tutor shows why.

Our tutors prepare Grade 12 students for the national examination — equations, complex numbers, functions and more, step by step, at home or online.
