English for Kindergarten 🧸

A first English course for children aged four to six. The alphabet with the sound each letter really makes, numbers to twenty, colours, shapes, eighty first words, sounding out little words, and the things we say every day — then seven picture games to play. Every card reads itself aloud and carries the Khmer meaning underneath, so a child can use it before they can read a single word.

What a kindergarten child should learn in English

Five areas, and they are not equally urgent. The order below is the order of importance, not the order you teach them in — the alphabet and numbers are usually the first content a class meets, but they are taught by ear long before anything is written down.

1. Listening and speaking

Following simple instructions, greetings, answering “What is your name?”, short sentences such as “I like apples”, and songs and rhymes. This carries the most weight of anything on the list.

2. Vocabulary — 300 to 500 words

Taught in themes: colours, numbers, shapes, family, body, animals, food, classroom, clothes, weather and action words. Heard many times before it is ever spoken.

3. Letters and their sounds

All 26 letters in both cases, and — more important — the sound each one makes. Knowing that B is called “bee” does not help a child read “bat”; knowing it says /b/ does. Then blending: c‑a‑t.

4. Pre‑writing and writing

Pencil grip, tracing lines and curves, then letters, then their own name. Pushed too early it only produces frustration — speaking should be well ahead of writing all year.

5. A little grammar, through use

I / you / he / she, “This is…”, “I have…”, “I can…”, one cat and two cats, and in / on / under. Never as rules — only inside sentences the child is already saying.

How long to spend

Five to ten minutes on one activity, then change. Two or three letters a week, one word group a week. Twenty short minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
